Srinagar records season's coldest night at minus 3.9degC
Srinagar, Nov. 27 -- The minimum temperatures plunged further in Kashmir valley as Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season on Wednesday.
The meteorological centre in Srinagar said that the summer capital experienced a minimum of minus 3.9degC on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.
An official of MeT said that the capital witnessed 4 degrees below normal during the night. "So far this is the coldest night in Srinagar this season," the official said.
The valley continued to experience foggy weather conditions during the mornings while the day was mostly clear, which caused the temperatures to plunge during the night.
The MeT, in an update, said that the coldest weather monitoring station in Kashmir was Konibal in South Kashmir where mercury dropped to minus 5.5degC during the night.
"In Pahalgam resort in the south, the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 4.6degC," he said.
Owing to the sub-zero temperatures in Kashmir, winter vacation was announced for Kindergarten classes in all the valley schools from Wednesday while other classes will break for vacations in staggered manner from December 1.
The meteorological centre said that all the other weather monitoring stations of Kashmir division also recorded sub zero temperatures as did Banihal in Jammu division.
Like the south, the northern stations also recorded below zero temps with Kupwara station witnessing a minimum of minus 4degC.
Jammu city was relatively better at 8.8degC and Katra at 8.5degC while Banihal was cold at minus 0.7degC.
The MeT forecast mainly dry weather for the next few days with cloudy weather and light snowfall expected over the mountains on December 02.
"Shallow to moderate fog is likely to continue at many places of Kashmir division and isolated places of Jammu division," the MeT said in an update.
"There will be further fall in minimum temp by 1-2degC during the next 7 days," it said....
