South scores hits as the stories are rooted in their culture
India, July 8 -- Raveena Tandon is gearing up for her Tamil cinema comeback after 24 years with Lawyer, co-starring Vijay Antony. Thrilled about her return, she tells us, "I'm excited and nervous because I know I have to brush up on my Tamil all over again."
Lawyer is Raveena's third Tamil film after Saadhu (1994) and Aalavandhan (2001). She has also worked in Telugu and Kannada industries, with KGF: Chapter 2 (2022) being her last South release.
"I have always worked in the South industry, right from the beginning in 1992, because I found their films intriguing. This is not what I'm saying now; you could pick up any of my interviews from the '90s, and I have said the same thing. The stories are deeply rooted in their culture and heritage, and they are not trying to serve the West. That's why somehow most of their films are hits," she says.
The 52-year-old adds, "Their films are rooted at the ground level, which is very important to create a mass connection. They have a ratio of probably more hits because they cater to what their masses want, and they can identify it."
Even after all these years, Raveena has managed to stay relevant and take up meaty roles. On this, she responds, "There's nothing that I've consciously done to stay relevant. What matters is the choices you make and how you have evolved as a person. Some people are still stuck in their ways and doing things like how it used to be. As a human being, you have to evolve first. The choices then automatically happen to you."...
