Sohal to meet DSW for women's quota in PU student body
Chandigarh, Sept. 13 -- Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) Gauravveer Sohal, who took oath on Thursday, will meet with Panjab University authorities soon for implementation of women's reservation in the PUCSC.
Earlier the varsity had planned to announce the post to be reserved during the oath-taking ceremony on Thursday, the proposal has now been put on hold on the basis of legal opinion taken by the varsity. As per officials, it has been recommended that the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations haven't differentiated between male and female students which is why PU has been advised to put the proposal on hold for now.
While the Dean Students Welfare office is likely to hold a meeting regarding this soon, newly elected PUCSC president Sohal said that he will take up this issue so it can be implemented in time for next year's elections.
"Women reservation is seen in other elections like for the state legislative assemblies and even for the city's municipal corporation. The same should follow in PU," he added. His party, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, had first taken up this issue in last year's election manifesto and had claimed victory after PU had first proposed this reservation even as it is yet to be implemented....
