Smuggling case: Ranya gets bail, to stay in jail
Bengaluru, May 21 -- A special court for economic offences in Bengaluru on Tuesday granted default bail to Kannada actress Ranya Rao and Telugu actor and businessman Tarun Konduru Raju in connection with a gold smuggling case filed against them in March this year.
Special judge Vishwanath Channabasappa Gowdar passed the order after noting that the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), which is investigating the case, failed to file a charge sheet within the stipulated 60-day period.
Despite securing bail, both Rao and Raju will continue to remain behind bars as they have also been booked under the stringent Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (Cofeposa), a preventive detention law applicable to cases of smuggling. The 1974 law allows individuals to be held without trial for up to a year based on suspicion of involvement in such activities.
The special court granted bail on the condition that each accused executed a bond of Rs.2 lakh and furnish two sureties. It also directed both accused to regularly attend trial court hearings, refrain from tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses, and fully cooperate with the investigation. It also barred both Rao and Raju from leaving India without the court's prior permission.
The court posted the matter on June 2 to assess compliance with the bail order.
Rao was arrested at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on March 3 after DRI officials found her in possession of 14.2 kg of gold bars worth Rs.12.5 crore, upon her arrival from Dubai, while Raju was taken into custody on March 9....
