India, Dec. 30 -- After chasing the goal for over two decades, City Beautiful finally became slum-free as it cleared encroachments on nearly 40 acres of the government land this year. The mission started in 2006 with the launch of the Chandigarh Small Flats Scheme, under which 25,728 flats were constructed to rehabilitate slum dwellers. So far, the UT has razed 19 slums and reclaimed over 520 acres, worth more than 21,000 crore. This year alone, it recovered land worth Rs.1,530 crore. What it means: The reclaimed land paves way for development under the third phase. Key projects include new CHB houses,shopping complexes, community facilities.
