SKM to hold protests against power bill on Jan 16
Jalandhar, Dec. 30 -- The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) will hold protests outside offices of deputy commissioners across the state on January 16 against the central government's proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Seed Bill, 2025, farmer leaders said.
As a part of sensitising farmers about these bills, the SKM is presently holding motorcycle rallies in different parts of the state.
SKM leader Santokh Singh Sandhu stated that the aim of the power bill is the centralisation and privatisation of the power sector to benefit corporate interests.
"The bill is far more dangerous than the three farm bills, as farming is not possible without electricity. It aims at promoting privatisation, increasing power costs and stopping subsidies given to the farmers," he claimed.
He added that the approval of the Act in the Lok Sabha will lead to the removal of prepaid meters, reinstatement of old meters, increased power cost, and forcible sale of PSPCL properties.
"The chip-based electricity meters are already being installed in several parts of the state. The power would become unaffordable for the marginal section of society," he said....
