Amritsar, July 4 -- The Global Sikh Council (GSC) has raised objections to the 34-member advisory committee recently constituted by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to draft service rules for the jathedar of Akal Takht. In a letter addressed to SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, GSC president Lady Singh Kanwaljit Kaur welcomed the initiative to establish a transparent framework for the appointment, qualifications and tenure of the jathedar. However, she expressed concerns over the committee's composition alleging that several members do not adhere to the Sikh Rehat Maryada, the official Sikh code of conduct, and are associated with practices contrary to core Sikh beliefs. The GSC warned that including individuals who promote un-Sikh practices, particularly at deras, compromises the credibility and sanctity of the entire process. The council also criticised the exclusion of scholars and representatives from the global Sikh diaspora, stating it undermines Panthic unity.
