SGPC should be brought under Punjab govt, says SAD faction
Amritsar, Dec. 3 -- The Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjeet), a breakaway faction of the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), on Tuesday said that the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) should be brought under the Punjab government. The arrangement that was there before the 1947 Partition should be restored, said party president Giani Harpreet Singh, former acting Jathedar of Akal Takht, who inaugurated the party's head office.
Addressing mediapersons, Giani Harpreet Singh said, "Time has come to liberate the SGPC from the clutches of the SAD's Badal faction. However, the central government is helping them by not holding the SGPC general elections. This is a direct interference of the central government in Sikhs' religious matters. Despite the formation of a separate Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC), SGPC members from the neighbouring state are still enjoying key posts in the largest gurdwara body."
Referring to the party's agenda, he said the motive was to free the state from the fear of gangsters and eradicate drugs.
