SGPC meet today, to discuss sacrilege law
AMRITSAR, April 6 -- The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Sunday appealed to leaders of all Sikh organisations to participate in a panthic gathering scheduled for April 6 to deliberate on the proposed law concerning incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.
The meeting will be held at Teja Singh Samundri Hall at the SGPC headquarters in the Golden Temple complex at 11 am.
"The issue is of utmost importance for the entire Sikh community, and there is a need to develop a collective panthic consensus after thorough discussions. Any legislation related to Guru Granth Sahib's sanctity must be carefully examined from all perspectives," Dhami said in a statement issued here.
He further said that invitations have already been sent to a wide spectrum of Sikh groups, including Nihang organisations, Damdami Taksal, Sikh institutions, scholars, judges and lawyers, Sikh Missionary Colleges, Singh Sabhas, Sikh federations, and leaders of various sects such as Nirmalas, Udasis, Sewapanthis, and Kar Seva bodies.
Meanwhile, a resolution passed during a seminar organised by Dal Khalsa urged Akal Takht acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj to look towards the Panth and not the government for dealing with increasing incidents of sacrilege.
The seminar was held in Rayya, near Amritsar.
"We appeal to the jathedar Akal Takht to take steps and actions to prepare the Khalsa Panth to responsibly and boldly face and respond to such challenges as per Sikh martial traditions rather than leaning before the government to frame any new law," the resolution said....
