SGPC forms panel for appointment of Akal Takht jathedar
AMRITSAR, June 27 -- Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami has formed a 34-member committee to review the service rules concerning the appointment and retirement of Akal Takht jathedar.
The move comes months after the SGPC controversially removed jathedars and installed new ones without allegedly following established protocols, triggering widespread debate within the Sikh community.
The newly formed committee includes a range of representatives from religious organisations, political bodies and academic institutions. Key members of the committee include a granthi of the Golden Temple, SGPC president, representative from the Shiromani Akali Dal, Damdami Taksal head, Budha Dal chief, president of Chief Khalsa Diwan, representative from Kendri Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Chandigarh, Prof Karamjeet Singh (vice-chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University), Dr Pritpal Singh (vice-chancellor, Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib); Sikh scholars Balkar Singh, Paramvir Singh, Prof Amarjeet Singh, Inderjeet Singh Gogoani, among others.
Dhami said that Sikh religious sects, organisations and scholars, including Takht Hazur Sahib, Dal Khalsa and Akhand Kirtani Jatha, have already submitted their written suggestions on the issue. The 34-member committee will now review these suggestions and submit its recommendations to the SGPC.
Despite the broad representation, the formation of the committee has sparked controversy, with several prominent Sikh bodies expressing dissatisfaction over their exclusion. The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC), and Sri Guru Singh Sabha have all raised objections to the lack of representation in the newly formed panel.
In a video message, DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka criticised SGPC president Dhami for not including the DSGMC in the committee. Kalka accused Dhami of adopting a biased approach and questioned the inclusion of the SAD in the panel....
