Patiala, Oct. 15 -- A Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) delegation led by its president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Tuesday met death-row convict Balwant Singh Rajoana inside the Patiala Central Jail. The meeting, which lasted for nearly an hour, discussed in detail a range of issues related to Rajoana's long-pending mercy petition and the upcoming Supreme Court hearing. "Our advocate met Rajoana on Tuesday and briefed him about the legal strategy ahead of the Supreme Court hearing," Dhami said after the meeting. Rajoana, a former Punjab Police constable, has been incarcerated for the past 29 years-15 of them on death row. He was sentenced to death in July 2007 for his role in the 1995 bomb attack that killed then Punjab CM Beant Singh and 16 others. His execution, initially fixed for March 31, 2012, was stayed following a mercy petition moved by the SGPC.
