Sector 17 breathes easier with relocation of courts, ISBT
India, April 19 -- In a move to decongest the heart of Chandigarh, the district courts, located in Sector 17 since 1966, were shifted to the new District Courts Complex in Sector 43 on January 25, 2013. The growing number of litigants and an expanding lawyer community had long necessitated more spacious infrastructure. The new complex now houses 30 courts, up from 20 in Sector 17. The court complex was strategically built next to the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Sector 43, which became operational in 2008 to ease the burden on the city's older and busier ISBT in Sector 17. ISBT-43 was constructed much earlier, in 1980, based on a design by Pierre Jeanneret-Le Corbusier's cousin and collaborator on many Chandigarh projects. Although the initial plan was to shift all bus operations to Sector 43, both ISBTs in Sectors 17 and 43 remain functional. Still, the relocation of two high-footfall establishments - the courts and part of the ISBT operations - significantly helped reduce congestion in Sector 17. To further rejuvenate the area, in 2018 the UT administration launched a plan to beautify 23 acres in the north and 12 acres in the south of Sector 17. Under this ambitious project, an urban park, pedestrian underpass, new fountain, uniform lighting, and a 30x30-metre map of Chandigarh in front of Neelam Theatre have been completed.
