SC recommends 10 lawyers for elevation as high court judges
Chandigarh, May 6 -- : The Supreme Court collegium has recommended the elevation of 10 lawyers of the Punjab and Haryana high court as judges, including Haryana advocate general Pravindra Singh Chauhan.
The collegium cleared the names of Monica Chhibber Sharma; additional advocate general, Punjab, Harmeet Singh Deol; Puja Chopra; Sunil Bindlish; Navdeep Singh, a leading military law lawyer; Divya Sharma and Ravinder Malik. The second list includes Pravindra Singh Chauhan, Rajesh Gaur and former Bar Council chairman Minderjeet Yadav. These recommendations were made at a meeting of the apex court collegium on May 4.
If all the recommendations are accepted by the Centre, the number of judges at the high court would be 68 against the sanctioned strength of 85 judges. The final notification comes from the President.
The strength, if achieved, would help in reducing the pendency of the cases that stands at 4.18 lakh right now according to the National Judicial Data Grid. It had touched 4.48 lakh cases in December 2021, at the peak of the pandemic. Five judges are set to retire later this year and four more are slated for retirement next year....
