SAD leader Verdev held, sent to 3-day remand
Ferozepur, Nov. 6 -- Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Verdev Singh Nonni was arrested from Dhanaula in Sangrur district on Tuesday night and sent to a three-day police remand in connection with a clash that broke out outside the block development and panchayat officer's office at Jalalabad in Fazilka district last year.
"A special police team apprehended Verdev Singh from Dhanaula. Following his arrest, he was produced before a court in Jalalabad this afternoon under tight security, where the court remanded him to police custody for three days," said deputy superintendent of police Gursewak Singh Brar.
Brar further added that after the arrest, all aspects related to the registered FIR are being thoroughly probed. "During remand period, the police will probe deeper into other dimensions of the case," the DSP said.
As per to officials, the incident dates back to October 2024, when a clash between rival groups escalated into violence, with allegations of stone-pelting and even firing. During the unrest, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Mandeep Singh Brar, contesting for the post of sarpanch from Muhammad Wala village, sustained a bullet injury to his chest.
Police registered a case against SAD leaders Vardev Singh Noni Mann, who had contested unsuccessfully thrice from Guru Har Sahai assembly segment as the Akali candidate, his younger brother Nardev Singh Bobby Mann, who had earlier contested the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Ferozepur, Harpinder Singh Mann, and 15-20 unidentified persons under relevant sections BNS and Arms Act following a complaint by Gurpreet Singh, another candidate for the post of sarpanch from Chak Suhelewala village.
On August 10, Nerdev was arrested. Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana HC had granted a stay on arrest of Verdev, however, his bail plea was rejected six months ago. On Monday, Verdev, requested transfer of the case from Fazilka. The HC constituted an SIT headed by deputy inspector general of police, Ferozepur, and directed state government to nominate two additional police officials to assist in probe.
