AMRITSAR, Oct. 22 -- The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has stoked a controversy by appointing former party MLA Farzana Alam as general secretary ofits women wing Istari Akali Dal as some Sikh segments opposed the move keeping in view the alleged role of her husband and retired IPS officer Izhar Alam in human rights violations during militancy in Punjab.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Kiranjot Kaur, who was also appointed the same, rejected the post objecting to keeping Farzana on the list with her.

Istari Akali Dal president Jagir Kaur, a former minister and ex-SGPC president, announced the list of the office-bearers on Tuesday.
