Reinstate Punjabi as official language in J&K: Giani Gargaj
AMRITSAR, Aug. 18 -- Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj on Sunday appealed to the Centre and state government to safeguard the interests of Sikhs in Jammu and Kashmir and reinstate Punjabi as the official language in the Union territory.
The jathedar, who is on a visit to J&K, said, "The governments should bear the responsibility to safeguard Kashmiri Sikhs' rights, noting that despite adversities, theynever abandoned Kashmirand always stood with the nation".
Raising concerns over the removal of Punjabi from Jammu and Kashmir's official languages after Article 370's abrogation, Jathedar Gargaj said this was unjust and must be reversed.
"We have no objection to Hindi, Urdu, Dogri, Kashmiri, or English being taught, but why deprive Sikhs of their mother tongue, Punjabi?" he asked....
