Registration deadline for UCC extended to one year
Dehradun, July 27 -- Uttarakhand government has extended the time limit for mandatory registration of marriage under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) from six months to one year.
A notification to this effect has been issued by the Department of Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs of the state government. This will benefit those who, due to certain reasons, have not been able to register their marriages under the UCC so far, the state government said in a release.
Since the implementation of the UCC on January 27, marriage registrations in the state have witnessed a significant surge at an average of 1,634 registrations per day, according to the state government. Only 67 marriages were registered daily on average under the earlier law, it further said.
Prior to the UCC, marriages in the state were registered under the Uttarakhand Marriage Registration Act, 2010. Between 2010 and January 26, 2025, a total of 3,30,064 marriages were registered under that Act.
However, since the rollout of the UCC, a total of 3,01,526 marriages have been registered in just six months and there has been a sharp increase in registration of marriages to the simplified process and robust legal backing provided under the new law, said the release....
