New Delhi, May 17 -- President Droupadi Murmu presented the 58th Jnanpith Award to Sanskrit scholar Jagadguru Rambhadracharya for the year 2023 at a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Friday. Poet Gulzar was also named as a recipient of the award, though he could not attend the ceremony due to health reasons. Congratulating both the awardees, the President said, "I congratulate Jagadguru Rambhadracharya Ji. Gulzar Ji could not attend the event, but I also congratulate him and wish him a speedy recovery. May he continue to contribute to art, literature, society, and the country." The Jnanpith Award is the highest literary honour in India, given to writers who have excelled in literature across different Indian languages. The recipient receives Rs.11 lakh, a bronze statue of Vagdevi (Saraswati), and a citation. Renowned Malayalam writer G Sankara Kurup was the first to receive the award in 1965. Speaking on the role of literature, Murmu said, "Literature connects and awakens society. From the social awakening of the 19th century to the freedom struggle of the 20th century, poets and writers have played a major role in uniting people."...
