Railways plan automatic doors for new non-AC local trains
New Delhi, June 10 -- The Indian Railways is planning to introduce an automatic door closure system in all new non-air conditioned rakes on Mumbai local trains, while the older rakes will be retrofitted later.
The move comes after at least four passengers died and four others were injured after falling from two moving local trains between Diva and Mumbra stations on Monday morning. While rakes with automatic doors were tested on Western Railways in 2016, the system has not been implemented across the board.
The rakes are being designed at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. "Our aim is to begin trials with two rakes from November this year," officials familiar with the development confirmed.
"In the wake of today's incident in Mumbai, the Railway Minister and the Railway Board held a detailed meeting with the ICF team. The purpose was to find a practical solution to the issue of automatic door closure in non-AC local trains in Mumbai. The main concern with such doors in non-AC trains is suffocation due to reduced ventilation," another railway official said
"To address this, the Railway Board has decided that all new non-AC trains will be designed and manufactured with improved ventilation through three major design changes," he said.
The revised design includes louvred doors, roof-mounted ventilation units to pump in fresh air, and vestibules connecting coaches so that passengers can move freely between them and balance out the crowd, he added.
"The first train featuring this new design will be ready by November 2025. After completing mandatory certifications, it is expected to enter service by January 2026," another official said. To be sure, these non-AC trains are in addition to the 238 AC trains being manufactured for the Mumbai suburban network. Additionally, retrofitting work for 3405 non-AC coaches has also been approved. "Around 80 lakh (8 million) passengers commute daily on Mumbai locals. A solution to avoid such accidents is introduction of automatic doors operating in suburban Mumbai," the official noted.
"All rakes currently under manufacturing for the Mumbai Suburban network will include automatic door closure systems. Existing rakes in service will also be redesigned to incorporate these systems," said Dilip Kumar, Executive Director (Information & Publicity), hours after the incident on Monday....
