Punjab-origin truck driver arrested after illegal U-turn kills 3
Chandigarh, Aug. 18 -- A Punjab-origin semi-truck driver has been arrested for vehicular homicide after the Florida highway safety and motor vehicles (FLHSMV) says he made a reckless manoeuvre which turned deadly on the Florida Turnpike in St Lucie County on August 12.
Harjinder Singh, 25, was taken into custody after investigators say he tried making an illegal U-turn, causing a minivan to collide with the side of his commercial semi-truck.
All three people inside the Chrysler minivan were killed in the crash.
An investigation revealed that Singh had been living illegally in the US since 2018. The FLHSMV says that he had a commercial driver's licence in the state of California after crossing the Mexico border illegally.
According to preliminary reports from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the semi-truck was travelling northbound in the right lane of the turnpike. The driver attempted to make a U-turn by crossing the median via an "official use only" access point - a manoeuvre prohibited for commercial vehicles and the general public.
As the truck crossed over multiple northbound lanes to reach the median, a northbound minivan in the left lane was unable to stop in time. The minivan collided directly with the side of the semi-truck's trailer. The impact crushed the front of the van, trapping its occupants inside.
The victims were identified as a 30-year-old man from Florida city, who was driving the van, a 37-year-old woman from Pompano Beach and a 54-year-old man from Miami.
The crash caused extensive delays, with all northbound lanes closed for several hours while investigators worked to document the scene and clear debris.
"The actions taken by the defendant while operating a commercial tractor-trailer are both shocking and criminal", said FLHSMV executive director Dave Kerner in a release.
"Three people lost their lives as a result of his recklessness, and countless friends and family members will experience the pain of their loss forever. Harjinder Singh is in custody on state vehicular homicide charges and immigration violations. He will no longer be able to damage and destroy the lives of Floridians and visitors. At the conclusion of his state charges, he will be deported. The Florida Highway Patrol remains committed to enforcing both state and federal law to ensure that people that are a danger to others face justice behind bars," the release said....
