Punjab Aces beat defending-champions Captain's 18 by 5-2
Chandigarh, Oct. 14 -- Punjab Aces continued their dominant run in the Chandigarh Golf League, defeating two-time defending champions Captain's 18 by 5-2 at the Chandigarh Golf Club on Monday.
In other matches, Tee Birds got the better of Signature Chiefs 5-2, The Mulligans beat Pirates of the Greens 4.5-2.5, while Empire and Seven Iron settled for a 3.5-3.5 draw.
Captain's 18 started out strong, taking early leads in most games, but Aces staged a spirited comeback. In the singles, Mivaan Singh, who was four-holes down at one stage, made a dramatic comeback to win one-up on the final hole. Meanwhile, TG Grewal held Bhupinder Singh Mundh to a tie after being dormie-2 with two birdies on the final two holes. The only game the Captain's 18 won was courtesy Sukhpal Singh Sangha and Baljinder Singh Sidhu, who won 2 and 1 in the first fourball game. After that the Aces gained momentum from the singles results as Jaskirat Dulet-Rupinder Singh pair won two-up, Rao Birender Sidhu-Dhruv Gupta and Balpreet Ghuman-Gursharan Grewal pairs won one-up to take the scoreline in their favour.
The Tee Birds made the most of their opponent's form as Brig HPS Dhillon and Rahul Batra led from the start with 5 and 3, and 4 and 2, wins in the singles.
The Mulligans went with a changed line-up after the reverse in their previous match with Sultan Matharoo going against Kabir Dhaliwal in the first singles which ended all square. Bismad Singh won his singles 3 and 1 while Amrinder Singh and Jaskeerat Kaur Matharoo bagged a 3 and 1 win. Angad Matharoo and APS Kahai pulled a huge 6 and 4 result in their favour as the returning Gauhar Pruthi combined with Surinder Jit Singh for a two-up win. In another game, Seven Iron prevented the Empire from taking any points. After trailing early in as many as five games, Dilsher Grewal won two-up after Himmat Singh Sandhu had put them ahead with a 4 and 3 win in the singles. Col HS Brar and Dr Agnish Rajesh carded a comfortable 5 and 4 win as did the Dalbir Singh Randhawa-Harpal Singh pair with a 4 and 3 result. In the final game of the match, Muneet Jakhar and Ashray Gakhar held on to the one-up lead they had secured only on the 14th hole....
