PU to hire ex-servicemen to boost campus security
Chandigarh, May 26 -- To bolster the security of the campus, Panjab University (PU) is set to recruit ex-servicemen for the posts of 50 new security guards and four security officers.
PU has written to the UT Zila Sainik Welfare Board and the offices for ex-servicemen welfare of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh regarding this. For the two posts of security officer and assistant security officer, PU will consider ex-servicemen of JCO rank in the various branches of the armed forces. For security guards it will have to be a former sepoy from the combatant forces. While there will be a physical and medical test, applicants for security guards will also have to run a 1 km race within ten minutes. Applicants can apply till June 4.
As per officials familiar with the matter, around 30 applications have already come for the security guard post. This is the first major recruitment event since 2013.
This follows restructuring of the varsity's security following the murder of UIET student Aditya Thakur on March 28 at a concert organised on PU's South Campus.
While PU is yet to finalise the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that were to be made regarding the working of the security office, it recently appointed a former SP rank Punjab Police officer, Tejinder Singh Sandhu, as officer on special duty (OSD), campus security. Anil Monga from PU Centre for police administration was given charge of adviser, campus security.
PU has also deputed Dinesh Kumar from PU department of laws as faculty-in-charge of the PU security office to oversee the functioning of the security department.
The varsity is also set to introduce new and stricter rules on campus from the next session onwards. There is a proposal to allow entry only to vehicles with stickers from next session. There is another proposal for PU to start paid parking on the campus and have a specially designated parking area for outsiders. The officials are currently working on both these proposals....
