PU rolls out smart IDs to curb unauthorised access
Chandigarh, Jan. 9 -- Panjab University (PU) on Thursday formally rolled out RFID (radio frequency identification) smart identity cards for its employees, marking a significant step in the university's push towards enhanced campus security and digital governance.
The initiative covers teaching staff, non-teaching staff, daily wagers and retirees, broadening the scope beyond the QR code-based system previously proposed.
The first RFID smart identity cards were presented to vice-chancellor Renu Vig and registrar YP Verma during the launch ceremony.

The cards contain encrypted personal data and photographs embedded in both a QR code and RFID tag, both of which are linked to the university's central employee database.
Officials said that any attempt to duplicate or tamper with the card renders the code unreadable.
Speaking at the event, Vig stressed the need to extend the system to students, suggesting a pilot implementation in university hostels.
Once fully implemented, the RFID cards will be integrated with boom barriers at campus entry points.
The university plans to later extend the system to students by linking it with mess, library and other services through a unified digital interface....
