Chandigarh, Dec. 19 -- The intelligence and criminal investigation (I&CI) directorate of the income tax (I-T) department on Wednesday unearthed irregularities to the tune of Rs.34,000 crore in the reporting of high-value property transactions in Punjab and Haryana. This was found during surveys carried out at the offices of tehsildars and naib tehsildars across Panchkula, Zirakpur, Pathankot and Sahnewal. According to officials, a large number of these deals were either not reported to the I-T department or were reported with incorrect permanent account numbers (PANs) so as to escape scrutiny under the income tax framework. Under existing rules, all property transactions above Rs.30 lakh must be reported to the department along with complete details, including PAN and Aadhaar of both buyers and sellers.
