Panchkula, Dec. 31 -- The Panchkula Metropolitan Development Authority (PMDA) is set to transform the city's infrastructure and livability with the launch of two major projects worth approximately Rs.128 crore. Approved by the high-powered purchase committee, chaired by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on December 27, these initiatives include the construction of a strategic bridge over the Ghaggar river and a comprehensive beautification plan for the city's natural water bodies, known as 'Jal Dharas'. To resolve chronic traffic congestion, PMDA will construct a new 333.90-metre-long bridge over the Ghaggar river near the Golf Club on the Sector 3/21 road at an estimated cost of Rs.32.5 crore. The 14-metre-wide structure will feature three lanes, supplementing the existing two-lane bridge that is currently overwhelmed by heavy traffic. Once completed within the next 24 months, the two bridges will operate as a one-way system, providing a permanent solution to the prolonged traffic jams faced by residents of Panchkula extension (Sectors 23-28). The second ambitious project involves the rejuvenation and beautification of two major natural storm-water drains: the 5.60-km Jal Dhara (from Mata Mansa Devi Temple to the Punjab border) and the 5.30-km Singh Nallah (from Sector 1 to the Industrial Area). Currently in a state of neglect, these streams have become dumping grounds for garbage and breeding hubs for mosquitoes. The Rs.95.42 crore redevelopment plan aims to eliminate foul odors and health hazards by constructing a 1.5-metre-wide precast central channel and RCC retaining walls. To prevent further littering, two-metre-high GI fencing will be installed along both banks. Beyond drainage improvements, the project will convert the surrounding land into vibrant public spaces. A project spokesperson highlighted that the revamped banks will feature premium amenities, including a cafeteria, ten badminton courts, six yoga zones, two volleyball courts, a skating rink, and children's play areas....
