India, Feb. 8 -- Advances in cancer treatment have significantly improved survival rates, allowing many survivors to consider parenthood after recovery. Planning a pregnancy after cancer requires a thoughtful and individualised approach, involving close coordination between oncologists and fertility specialists. The timing of pregnancy depends on the type of cancer, the treatment received, and the risk of recurrence. Most experts recommend waiting until treatment is completed and the disease is in remission. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery may affect ovarian or testicular function, making fertility assessment essential before attempting conception. Pre-treatment fertility preservation options, such as freezing eggs, embryos, or sperm, can significantly improve future reproductive possibilities. Pregnancy after cancer is generally considered safe and does not increase the risk of recurrence in most cancers, including breast cancer, when appropriately timed. Survivors should also receive genetic counselling when hereditary cancer syndromes are suspected. With careful planning, emotional support, and multidisciplinary care, many cancer survivors can achieve healthy pregnancies and fulfil their desire for parenthood.
