India, Dec. 21 -- Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is a form of genetic testing used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) to test embryos for genetic conditions before they are implanted into the uterus. This powerful testing can increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy and reduce the risk of genetic disorders in future generations and might help in decreasing the burden of these serious conditions in families. In PGT, embryos are made through an IVF cycle, tested for various genetic abnormalities and normal one is selected for transfer to mother's womb; thereby preventing the birth of genetically abnormal child. This technique is especially helpful for couples with history of repeated miscarriages, failed IVF cycles, advanced maternal age, previous child or family member with Down Syndrome, thalassemia, spinal muscular atrophy or carrier couples at risk of transmitting any genetic disorders to their children.
