P'kula police deploy spl teams to combat rising street crime
Panchkula, Aug. 28 -- In a major effort to curb rising crime and instill fear in criminals, the Panchkula district police have launched a new initiative, deploying specialised teams to target both street crime and organised crime. The teams have been dispatched to areas with a high concentration of criminal activity.
Police are also taking a firm stance against the use of social media to promote crime. Officials said that posting photos or videos while brandishing weapons to influence others and create public fear will now lead to an immediate arrest and the filing of a criminal case. These teams will use advanced technology and human intelligence to trace the location of such posts and apprehend the culprits.
The new teams will establish sources in affected and sensitive areas, including known hideouts and residences of anti-social elements. According to a specialised unit officer, a six-member team has been formed from his cell, with almost similar-sized teams created at local police stations and posts. A dedicated dog squad will also be used for routine checks. These units will focus on apprehending drug peddlers, gamblers, and those involved in snatching, theft, and the sale of stolen goods. Police have observed that the majority of crimes in the city are related to colonies and their surrounding areas. Panchkula police commissioner, Sibash Kabiraj told HT that the teams were formed to control crime, particularly in densely populated colonies and villages where heightened vigilance is required. "The teams will concentrate their efforts on areas like Budhanpur village, Rajiv Colony, Indira Colony, Gandhi Colony, Kharak Mangoli village, Abhay Pur village, and various rehabilitation colonies.
Councillor Usha Rani of Ward 7 said a long-pending demand for a police beat box in her ward has not been met, despite the area's large population and rising criminal activities. She said a formal letter was sent to police commissioner in April 2024....
