Over 600 women screened for diabetes, cancer
Bathinda, Sept. 23 -- The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bathinda, has screened over 600 women for various diseases, including cervical and breast cancers, diabetes, and glaucoma, free of charge over the last six days. Head of the obstetrics and gynaecology department, Dr Lajya Devi Goyal, said on Monday that the special camps are being organised in different parts of Bathinda, Mansa, Faridkot, and Moga under the Centre's 'Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan', which will last till October 2.
Besides the spot diagnosis in the field and at AIIMS, patients found to be positive for various ailments will be treated at the institute free of charge.
Goyal said that under the health outreach for women and children, the patients are also being counselled for personal hygiene and prevention of various diseases through self-examination and using available simple medical tests at the AIIMS.
She said that during a medical check-up, nearly 20% women were found to be patients of diabetes, while 35% were patients of hypertension. Head of community and family medicine, Prof Rakesh Kakkar, said that obesity and anaemia among youngsters were also found to be widespread among those screened at the camps. He said that a sedentary lifestyle and lack of nutrient-rich food are blamed for various diseases, like diabetes etc.HTC...
