Op Kalanemi: 14 'fake' seers held in Uttarakhand
Dehradun, Sept. 8 -- Uttarakhand Police has so far verified over 5500 people, arrested 14 and taken preventive action against 1182 others under "Operation Kalanemi", launched to crack down on individuals impersonating seers and duping the public, officials said.
Addressing a press conference on the action taken so far, inspector general of police (law and order) Nilesh Anand Bharne said, "To protect the cultural heritage and identity of Devbhoomi, Operation Kalanemi was launched under the guidance of the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The drive primarily targets anti-social elements who conceal their real identity and exploit religious sentiments to dupe people. We have seen remarkable success across the state under the campaign."
He added, "The state police has verified over 5,500 people under this campaign in the state. Over 14 people have been arrested and preventive action has been taken against 1182 people. We have also checked documents of a large number suspicious people and exposed fraud related cases."
Briefing on district-wise action, Bharne said, "So far, 2,704 people have been verified in Haridwar, and 3 of them have been arrested. In Dehradun, 922 people have been verified and 5 arrests have been made."
"We have also taken action in Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Almora, Nainital and other districts," he said.
"The campaign has sent a strong message to society that Uttarakhand Police will not spare anyone who undermines the sanctity of Devbhoomi. We are committed to ensuring that the sacred image of Devbhoomi remains intact. For this, continuous monitoring and intensive verification drives are being carried out in every district. Through Operation Kalanemi, our message is clear that strict action will be taken against those who tamper with society and culture," Bharne added.
He said under the campaign, the police arrested Bangladeshi citizens in Dehradun and Haridwar, and busted an "international religious conversion racket in Dehradun, and arrested a man posing as an IAS officer in Tehri Garhwal.
On July 10, Dhami announced "Operation Kalanemi" to identify fake seers to protect the cultural heritage.
He had said , "Anyone impersonating seers or religious figures to deceive people will be dealt with sternly, as such actions not only violate the law but also hurt religious sentiments and tarnish the image of Sanatan Dharma"....
