Officials summoned over 'inaction' in casteist remark cases
Chandigarh, Aug. 3 -- The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has summoned the Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) and the Amritsar police commissioner to appear in person and submit reports in two separate cases involving allegations of caste-based harassment.
Commission chairman Sardar Jasvir Singh Garhi has directed Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans to appear before it on August 4 regarding a case filed by a senior government officer. A commission spokesperson said Dr Sandeep Kaur, assistant director at the Physical/Audio Forensic Science Laboratory in Phase-4, Mohali, lodged a complaint on January 20, accusing her superior Ashwani Kalia of making casteist remarks against her. The spokesperson further stated that despite a recommendation from the district attorney to register a case, the police have yet to initiate action.
In a separate matter, Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar has also been directed to appear on August 4. The directive follows a complaint filed by Parminder Kaur, a resident of Udham Singh Colony, Shahrwar Gate, Amritsar, who alleged harassment by an individual who, according to her complaint, uses caste-based slurs, utters obscene remarks as she leaves for work, and has allegedly made videos of her illegally.
Despite the commission previously seeking a report from the Punjab Bureau of Investigation's director, no concrete action has been taken, the spokesperson said....
