Dehradun, May 4 -- Devotees visiting the Kedarnath Dham can now avail free WiFi facility available in the area, Uttarakhand government said on Saturday. "The state government is making all possible efforts to ensure that the journey of devotees arriving from across the country and abroad for the Chardham Yatra is smooth and pleasant. In this direction, the Kedarnath Dham Yatra has achieved a new milestone. Devotees visiting Kedarpuri for darshan will now have access to free WiFi. Following a successful trial on Saturday, this facility has been officially dedicated to the devotees," the state government said in a release. "Under the leadership of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and the initiative of district magistrate Saurabh Gaharwar, Rudraprayag district has undertaken this historic step by establishing its own mobile network, named the 'District Disaster Resource Network'. This network is designed to function continuously during disasters or critical situations, offering mobile data, voice calling, and high-quality CCTV surveillance. As part of this initiative, devotees can also avail free WiFi," the statement said . Rudraprayag chief development officer GS Khati said that to access the WiFi service, users have to go to their device's WiFi settings and register their mobilenumber. An OTP will then be sent to the registered number, and upon entering it, users can avail high-speed WiFi for 30 minutes. According to officials, Rudraprayag has become the first district in the country to establish its independent mobile network. During the disaster on the Kedarnath trek route in July 2024, when all other mobile networks had failed, this network served as a lifeline for travellers.
