New Delhi, May 2 -- The Supreme Court on Thursday said that in the five-kilometre radius around Taj Mahal in Agra, not a single tree will be felled without its permission, even as it relaxed the norms for tree felling in areas beyond the demarcation. The court order came on an application urging relaxation of the top court's May 2015 order that restricted tree felling in the entire Taj trapezium zone (TTZ) covering 10,400 square km. A bench of justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan said tree felling in areas within TTZ beyond the 5 km distance of the historical monument will require the prior permission of the divisional forest officer (DFO) of the central empowered committee (CEC) and the officer will be bound by the provisions of UP Tree Preservation Act. "Areas located within 5 kilometres of Taj Mahal are concerned, original order dated May 8, 2015 will continue to operate. In such cases, applications will have to be made seeking permission to fell trees, even if trees are less than 50." it stated....
