Silchar, Aug. 22 -- The Assam government will stop issuing first-time Aadhaar cards to people above 18 years of age in the state as a precautionary measure to check illegal immigrants from getting Indian citizenship, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday. He noted that the state has already reached "saturation point" in Aadhaar enrolment, with coverage "crossing 102%." Talking to reporters after a cabinet meeting in Guwahati, Sarma said only a one-month window from September 1 will be given to the adults to apply for an Aadhaar card if anyone has not got the document yet. The new order will take effect from October 1, with exceptions for SC, ST and Tea Tribes, he added. "This is a precautionary measure to ensure no illegal foreigner can become an Indian citizen in the future. It is irrespective of religion or any other criteria. We are committed to safeguarding Assam from infiltration," he said. Sarma pointed out that Aadhaar enrolment in Assam has exceeded population count. "The saturation among general population is 102%, which means number of cards is higher than people. But in case of Tea Tribes, SC and ST, saturation is only 96%, which is why they need time," he added.htc...
