NIA conducts searches at 18 locations in Punjab, Hry, UP
Jalandhar/Hoshiarpur, June 27 -- The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday carried out multiple raids at 18 locations in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as part of its ongoing investigation into the grenade attack at the residence of senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia in Jalandhar.
Issuing a formal statement, NIA spokesperson said various incriminating materials, including mobiles/digital devices and documents were seized from these locations linked with Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) operative Kulbir Sidhu, US-based gangster Manish @ Kaka Rana, and their nodes based in India and various other countries.
On April 12, the NIA took over the investigation into the grenade attack on BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia's residence, which occurred on April 7. The attack shattered glass panes and damaged vehicles but fortunately caused no injuries. The main suspect, Saidul Ameen, who lobbed the grenade, was arrested by the Punjab police on April 12. The attack was claimed by Shahzad Bhatti, a self-styled "don" of Pakistan and an active operative of the Pakistan intelligence agency ISI, along with gangster Zeeshan Akhtar.
The spokesperson added that Kulbir Sidhu, who originally hails from Yamunanagar in Haryana, is currently in Germany and is a key aide of designated terrorist and BKI chief, Pakistan-based Wadhawa Singh Babbar. Sidhu is also an accused in the NIA case related to the murder of VHP leader Vikas Prabhakar in Nangal, Punjab, in April 2024.
In Punjab, searches were carried out in Hoshiarpur, SBS Nagar, Jalandhar, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran and Mansa districts, while in Haryana, the NIA teams cracked down in the districts of Kurukshetra, Yamuna Nagar, Karnal and Ambala. A similar operation was conducted in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh.
The NIA, assisted by local police, cordoned off the residence of a 26-year-old IT expert in Jalandhar's Friend Colony. A search operation was conducted, and an individual from Ferozepur was questioned for over five hours.
According to police, he has no criminal record.
The NIA also seized mobile phones and laptops of the youth, who works at an IT company in Chandigarh and currently resides in Jalandhar with his family. The NIA has also summoned him to appear before the agency at its regional headquarters in Chandigarh next week.
In Hoshiarpur, NIA teams conducted simultaneous raids at the residences of Daljit Singh and Saurav, continuing their search for nearly six hours. The agency seized digital devices and other documents from the premises. Daljit Singh, who is wanted in drug and illicit liquor cases and has been declared a proclaimed offender by a local court, is believed to be residing in Germany. His wife has been asked to join the investigation.
The NIA also conducted raids in Makhupur and Chuharpur villages in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. Two individuals, identified as Ajay Kumar from Makhupur and Rinku from Chuharpur, were questioned, and their mobiles were seized. Both have been summoned to appear before the agency next week.
