NGT issues notice to six cricket stadiums over non-compliance
New Delhi, April 24 -- The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notices to six cricket stadiums across the country, including Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium and Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium, questioning why it should not suspend activities there altogether, for failing to comply with its directions. A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava said despite being given ample time to respond and share data on groundwater usage and subsequent recharge at these stadiums, the respective boards or cricket associations failed to share information.
The Delhi & District Cricket Association, under which the Arun Jaitley Stadium comes, assured compliance. "Our surveys are done. We have our compliances and permissions in place. We submitted the status report asked of us as of March 18, 2025 and have not received any notice since then." it said.
The DY Patil stadium founder Vijay Patil could not be reached.
However, a stadium official who did not want to be identified, said, "There was a team of three people who visited the stadium. A borewell that was sealed and no longer being used was also taken note of. As per our understanding, they were happy with our efforts. We have written to them and intend to fully comply with the norms."
NGT has been hearing a 2021 plea by applicant Haider Ali, who alleged that stadiums were using groundwater for ground maintenance without availing alternatives such as STP water or rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems to store rainwater. In 2023, an execution application was subsequently filed, seeking action from all cricket stadiums.
The latest order, dated April 16, but shared publicly on Thursday, came after a submission on April 15 by the Central Groundwater Authority (CGWA) which said seven cricket stadiums were yet to share information or any data. By the time of the hearing, one of these , Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium had shared information....
