Need for a social safety net in competitive times
India, June 2 -- In the months leading up to the mass suicide by his seven-member family in Panchkula on May 27, the 42-year-old businessman tried everything from running a taxi service to an online content platform, but he failed to overcome his financial struggles. The Haryana Police probe found that incident was premeditated, involving online procurement of a chemical compound for suicide.
Though relatives expressed shock and claimed the family had distanced itself due to mounting debt, the incident highlights how in today's competitive world, we may be connected like never before through technology but we are losing touch with meaningful relationships. Joint families were once considered a safety net, offering emotional support, financial assistance, and shared responsibility. They acted as a buffer against financial hardship and social isolation. With nuclear families becoming common, the need for a social safety net through government support services are imperative. For that, families also have to reach out for help.
Unfortunately, since childhood we are conditioned to ace the race instead of reaching out to help each other. Life throws challenges at all of us and they are meant to lead to personal growth. With time, one realises everyone's journey is unique and there is no competition. Despite the best of plans, skills and support, so-called success can be elusive.
