Nations in acute hunger grip for 6th year in row
Mumbai, May 18 -- The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday arrested two members of the banned terrorist outfit Islamic State (IS) in connection with a 2023 case involving the fabrication and testing of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Pune, the agency said in a statement.
The accused, identified as Abdullah Faiyaz Shaikh alias Diaperwala and Talha Khan, were intercepted by immigration authorities at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai early on Saturday. The two were returning from Jakarta, Indonesia, where they had been evading arrest. NIA then took the accused into custody and arrested them, the agency said in a statement.
"The two accused had been on the run for the past two years and had non-bailable warrants issued against them by the NIA Special Court, Mumbai," NIA said. "NIA had declared a cash reward of Rs.3 lakh each for information on the two accused."
The case pertains to an alleged IS-linked sleeper cell operating out of Pune that was conspiring to execute terrorist acts "with the aim to disturb India's peace and communal harmony by waging a war against the government".
The two arrested -- along with eight others named in the charge sheet -- were allegedly engaged in assembling IEDs from a house rented house in Kondhwa area of Pune. From 2022 to 2023, the accused also "organised and participated in a bomb making and training workshop, besides carrying out a controlled explosion to test an IED fabricated by them, at these premises", NIA said.
The agency charged the 10 accused under the UAPA, Arms Act and the Indian Penal Code....
