Nakodar police firing: House panel to probe disappearance of report
Chandigarh, July 16 -- The Punjab assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution to form a House panel to locate the missing action taken report (ATR) related to the 1986 Nakodar Police firing, in which four Sikh youth were killed during protests against the burning of "birs" of Guru Granth Sahib. The resolution was moved by finance minister Harpal Cheema after speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan raised the issue just before CM Bhagwant Mann was set to speak on the anti-sacrilege bill.
The panel will investigate the disappearance of the ATR, which is reportedly missing from the vidhan sabha records.
On February 2, 1986, four "birs" of Guru Granth Sahib were set on fire in Nakodar, sparking widespread protests. On February 4, 1986, when a group of Sikh protesters gathered to demand justice, police opened fire on the crowd, killing four individuals on the spot.
In response to the incident, the then Parkash Singh Badal government appointed a judicial commission, led by justice (retd) Gurnam Singh, to investigate the matter.
The report was submitted in 1986 but was never acted upon. It was later tabled in the vidhan sabha in January 2001, however, the ATR documenting the actions taken based on the report has never been made public. The issue came to light once again when the family members of the deceased filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana high court.
