moving to sec-39 mkt: a 'high-hanging' fruit
India, Dec. 31 -- To decongest Sector 26, the UT administration had acquired 78 acres in 1990 to move the fruit and vegetable market to Sector 39. Over two decades later, the project still remains largely on paper.
Why it matters: Besides easing the congestion at Sector 26, the new market at Sector 39 is expected to modernise the wholesale trade infrastructure.
Challenges: The construction at Sector 39 came to a standstill in 2015 due to shortage of funds. Despite the Punjab and Haryana high court's intervention, the project didn't move forward for the next seven years. Later, in 2023, the administration found that a major Kajauli waterworks pipeline ran beneath the project site, posing fresh technical challenges.
Where it stands: UT decided to provide a green cover over the area housing the water pipelines. After UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria's approval, a few shops were auctioned this year. Though some traders had moved the Supreme Court against the shifting, the apex court has dismissed their plea. UT now says more allotments andauctions will take place in 2026....
