Jammu/Srinagar, Feb. 14 -- A total of 32,425 cancer cases have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir over the last three years with lung, breast, oral, cervical, prostate and pancreatic being the most common with Kashmir reporting more than 25,621 cases. The government shared the data in legislative assembly here following an unstarred question by PDP legislator Waheed Ur Rehman Para. "No specific disease of uncommon or public health significance has been reported. However, the most commonly reported disease has been detected is different types of cancers like gastro-intestinal malignancies (esophagus, stomach & colorectal) lung, breast, oral, cervical, prostate, pancreatic etc," said health minister Sakina Itoo. "While the data presented, indicates a slight increase in reported cancer cases, it is important to note that this cannot be conclusively interpreted as an actual rise in cancer incidence without further detailed epidemiological research. The observed increase is likely influenced by significantly improved diagnostic capabilities and enhanced detection rates across healthcare institutions," she added. The reply stated that in Jammu province, 6,804 cancer cases were recorded over the last three years--2,036 in 2023; 2,187 in 2024 and 2,581 in 2025. However, in Kashmir, 25,621 cases were reported in three years--8,021 in 2022; 8,621 in 2023 and 8,979 in 2024.
