Jalandhar/Sangrur, Sept. 10 -- As many as 129 schools in four districts of the state remained shut on Tuesday due to structural damage caused by floods or being used as relief camps. In Jalandhar district, 41 government schools and 33 schools in Kapurthala district remained closed on Tuesday. Kapurthala DC Amit Kumar Panchal said that these schools suffered major damage due to torrential rainfall and floods in the Sultanpur Lodhi area. "The schools will be reopened after carrying out adequate repairs and physical verifications for the safety of students," he said. Jalandhar DC Himanshu Aggarwal said the officials concerned have been asked to visit these schools personally and assess damage caused to the school buildings. In Sangrur and Barnala, as many as 50 schools are either shut or partially opened. In Sangrur, out of a total of 1,063 schools, 45 schools are not fully operational. District education officer (DEO) Tarwinder Kaur explained that in 25 of these schools online classes are being held. "The remaining 20 schools are located near the flood-prone areas and hence will remain closed till further orders," she said. In Barnala, out of 730 schools, 5 have not reopened. DEO Suneetinder Singh said that five secondary schools are partially open. "Three of them are being used as the relief camps, and two have building issues hence are partially opened. Five primary schools in the district are also closed due to damage to their buildings," Suneetinder Singh said. Meanwhile, all the government schools in Hoshiarpur district did not open on Tuesday due to conflicting reports on the safety of the buildings. On Monday evening, the administration announced the opening of all but 14 schools, but later it was decided to keep all schools shut for another day. Sources in the education department said that the assessment reports received from different quarters, including school staff, revenue, and panchayati departments, did not match. "Many buildings declared safe by teachers were found to be structurally unsound. So schools would remain shut till a thorough verification of buildings was done," DC Aashika Jain said. In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, the DC said that 20 schools would remain closed till further notice....
