Modi: BJP's third term is confirmed in Assam
GUWAHATI, April 2 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said a third term for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Assam was already confirmed in next week's assembly election.
Addressing a meeting in Gogamukh of Dhemaji district, Modi urged the public to be aware of the Congress, alleging that the opposition party was planning to enact a "dangerous communal law" if it came to power in the state.
"Assam has seen service and good governance in the past 10 years since the BJP has been in power. A hat-trick (of wins) is confirmed this time. It is with your blessings I became a prime minister for three times and the same will ensure that a BJP government in formed in Assam for the third time," he said at an election meeting in Gogamukh.
"It will be a hat-trick of losses for Congress (in Assam) and a century of defeats for Congress's so-called prince," Modi said in an oblique reference to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi without naming him.
Modi stated that prior to the general election in 2014, the Congress-led government at Centre had tried to enact a legislation on communal violence in order to appease their "permanent vote bank". The PM stated that the proposed legislation planned to make the majority population responsible for communal violence and the religious minority as victims at all times.
"This bill itself was communal in nature and that's why BJP and our NDA allies opposed it and didn't allow it's enactment in Parliament. If this legislation was enacted and if Congress had returned to power (in 2014) then it would have resulted in unimaginable exploitation of the country's majority population...Now after 12 years, Congress is planning a similar legislation in Assam and making announcements about it," he said.
Modi was referring to Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi's recent remarks promising that if the party formed the government in Assam, it will enact a stringent law against hate speech.
Alleging that Congress was ready to do anything to get back to power, Modi said the opposition party had becoming like the Muslim League.
"The same thing is being done by the Congress at present. The party is openly supporting infiltration and infiltrators. Earlier Congress allowed infiltrators to encroach the lands of tribals and farmers, and turn the indigenous population of Assam into a minority," he said.
The PM highlighted the 31-promises made in the BJP's manifesto released on Tuesday, and said it will usher in rapid development, industrialisation and social transformation. "You all know that whatever the BJP promises, it delivers," he said.
Modi mentioned how earlier the state was known for tea, but with the setting up of a semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, the state will be known for chips as well. "Now Assam will be known both for 'chai' (tea) and chips. This is BJP roadmap for the Assam," he said....
