Mockery of religion: Raftaar slams rapper Tommy Genesis
India, June 24 -- Canadian rapper Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, popularly known as Tommy Genesis, has come under fire after dropping a provocative music video for her track True Blue.
On Sunday, rapper Raftaar posted a screenshot of himself reporting the video on YouTube and urged fans to do the same. "This is a mockery of my religion. This shouldn't exist," he wrote.
Clips from the video - showing the 34-year-old wearing blue body paint, gold jewellery, and a red bindi - sparked outrage for Tommy's resemblance to the goddess Kaali. Additionally, the music video shows Tommy licking a cross; in one particular shot, the symbol is placed by the artiste's posterior.
The track, which was released on June 20, has received strong reactions across platforms, with several social media users calling the rapper out for cultural appropriation. "This creator must be cancelled because wtf is this, stop using our religion for your cheap publicity (sic)," read one comment. "Capitalism or clout-chasing doesn't justify mocking someone's faith. Do better."
True Blue is the first single off of the rapper's upcoming album. Tommy, born to Tamil and Swedish parents, was once called "the internet's most rebellious rap queen" by Dazed. She has yet to publicly respond to the backlash. htc...
