Mittal: Build infra before implementing SC's order on stray dogs
Chandigarh, Nov. 8 -- Aam Aadmi Party's Rajya Sabha member and founder-chancellor of Lovely Professional University (LPU), Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal, on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court's directive on removing stray dogs from public spaces and rehabilitating them in shelters, while cautioning that its successful implementation will depend on the availability of adequate infrastructure. "The directive to remove stray dogs from educational institutions, hospitals, bus stands, railway stations and other public spaces to shelters is well-meaning, but do we have the required infrastructure?" Mittal asked in a statement.
The AAP MP recalled his address in Parliament on July 27, 2024, where he had proposed a dedicated block-level rehabilitation strategy for strays, integrated with the Swachh Bharat Mission, as well as making stray animal management a criterion under urban local bodies' ranking. Reiterating that the focus must remain on humane sheltering, sterilisation, vaccination, and rehabilitation, Mittal explained that this is not about removing strays, but about reforming how India manages coexistence.
