Missile debris recovered in Amritsar, Hoshiarpur areas
Amritsar, May 9 -- Amid tension between India and Pakistan following the targeted strikes on terror camps and Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, panic gripped residents of Punjab's border district of Amritsar when they heard explosions and saw lights flashing in the sky around 1am on Thursday followed by a power shutdown.
Debris of what appeared to be missiles was recovered from fields in Jethuwal, Makhan Windi and Pandher on the city's outskirts in the morning. The debris of missiles were also recovered from Kumahi Devi village near Hoshiarpur's Talwara, over 110 km away.
"There was panic all around. After the explosion, a part of the missile fell in a field at Jethuwal, while debris was found scattered over houses also. Villagers informed the police who arrived and took the debris away," said Parkash Singh, a resident of the village.
After a part of a missile was spotted at Makhan Windi, which is situated near Jethuwal village, the police were informed. Army personnel also reached the spot.
The residents were startled by the loud explosions between 1am and 2am and when they stepped out to check what had happened, they saw "illuminated objects" in the sky. "I woke up with a start on hearing the explosion. Soon, other members of the family and relatives in the city started calling up because they had also heard the blast," said advocate Jaswinder Singh.
He said pieces of metal were found on the terrace of a nearby building. Another object was found from Pandher village under Majitha police station.
Police officials were tightlipped. "The protocol has been changed, we cannot speak on this matter," said a senior police officer of the border range of Punjab Police.
Though there has been no official confirmation of the cause behind Wednesday night's explosions and the nature of debris found so far, Amritsar, which is located 30km from the international border, is on high alert since the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22. As part of heightened security measures, Amritsar airport has been shut down since Wednesday morning. "The administrative authorities should clarify on the situation so that citizens can stay alert accordingly," Jaswinder Singh added....
