Mayor urges GMADA to shift waste plants from Phase 5, 11 to outskirts
Mohali, July 9 -- Mayor Amarjit Singh Jiti Sidhu on Tuesday submitted a formal demand letter to Vishesh Sarangal, chief administrator of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) and requested relocation of the garbage processing plants currently operating near the Resource Management Centre (RMC) in Phase 5 and near the railway line in Phase 11.
Residents have long been raising concerns over these garbage processing plants.
They alleged that the site, which was initially intended to be a dump for dry leaves, has now turned into a full-scale garbage dumping site, leading to serious hygiene and environmental concerns.
In a meeting with Sarangal, Sidhu highlighted that the plants are located dangerously close to residential areas. He cited persistent foul smell and environmental hazards that have made life difficult for nearby residents. Highlighting rising public opposition, the mayor stressed the urgent need to shift both plants outside city limits. Speaking to media, he said that GMADA has assured the allocation of around 30 acres of land near Jhanjeri for a new dumping site. Municipal councillors Harjeet Singh Bholu, Sucha Singh Kalour, Jagdish Jagga, Jagatpur Sarpanch Ranjit Gill, and residents of Phases 5 and 11 were also present in the meeting....
