Mayor Babla directs officials to expedite legacy waste clearance
Chandigarh, Dec. 13 -- Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla on Friday visited the city's legacy waste site and directed the officials to expedite the clearing of the waste.
The visit aimed at assessing the present condition of the legacy waste mound and the pace of ongoing bio-mining and clearance operations.
She was accompanied by CB Ojha, chief engineer, SE, horticulture and concerned officials of the municipal corporation. She instructed the engineering team to deploy additional machines, increase manpower, and ensure round-the-clock operations until a substantial reduction in waste heaps is achieved.
The mayor emphasised that the legacy waste must be cleared as soon as possible to prevent environmental hazards, enhance sanitation, and improve the surrounding ecosystem. She further directed officials to begin planning landscaping and beautification of the reclaimed area so that the site can be transformed into a cleaner, greener public-friendly space. Babla also instructed officials to share daily progress reports and to immediately resolve any delays or operational challenges. She said that solid waste management efforts will be intensified and all required resources will be provided to expedite the legacy waste clearance and subsequent beautification work.
The Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) on Friday issued a challan Rs.13,401 to a violator, in Sector 37, for improper waste disposal, said officials.
The action was taken following directions by medical officer of heath Dr Inderdeep Kaur. On her way to office she noticed waste dumped improperly outside a Sector 37-C house and asked the area health supervisor to inspect and get the site cleared. Following which, the health supervisor and sanitary inspector visited the spot, conducted an inquiry, and issued a challan of Rs.13,401 to the violator.
In a separate incident at EWS Flats, Dhanas, a defaulter was fined Rs.13,401 for violating waste management norms. He was identified after a discarded gas receipt was recovered from the household waste.
