India, Dec. 30 -- The monsoon deluge left Mohali, particularly the peripheral towns of Kharar and Zirakpur, waterlogged and caught incrippling traffic snarls. The inadequate drainage and unfinished road carpeting and sewer works left key roads, including theZirakpur-Chandigarh road, and residential colonies inundated. What it means: Though Mohali is the only planned city in Punjab, the amenities in its periphery are poor. Kharar and Dera Bassi don't even have proper sewerage systems, water supply or road connectivity. Unplanned growth in the periphery is rampant, driven by high demand for housing, leading to illegal colonies on agricultural land in peripheral villages, bypassing GMADA regulations. This causes issues like lack of infrastructure and sanitation. What next: With repairs underway, residents can expect better conditions by next monsoon though the long-term solution depends on comprehensivedrainage planning. GMADA is cracking down on illegal colonies. To improve drainage, experts say de-silting of storm sewer pipes is needed and bigger projects forlaying new pipes in the periphery should be started....
