Mann 'diluting' state's riparian rights: Oppn
Chandigarh, Jan. 28 -- The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Congress on Tuesday launched sharp attack on Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann over his remarks following a meeting with his Haryana counterpart Nayab Singh Saini on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal issue, accusing him of undermining Punjab's riparian rights.
SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal said Mann's reference to Bhai Kanhaiya ji to justify sharing Punjab's river waters with other states, particularly Haryana, was "outrageous and sacrilegious".
"Dasam Patshah blessed acts of compassion and charity but also taught us to fight for our just rights. It is one thing to offer water to the dying as an act of compassion, as Bhai Kanhaiya ji did, and quite another to surrender Punjab's lifeline - the river waters," Sukhbir wrote in a post on X. He asked the CM to apologise for "distorting Sikh history," asserting that the SYL issue concerns Punjab's riparian rights, not charity.
Leader of the Opposition and senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa also launched a scathing attack on the CM, accusing him of exposing Punjab's interests on the SYL issue. Addressing a press conference, Bajwa said Mann's "ill intentions" had now become clear.
"In a joint press conference with Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini, Mann shamelessly invoked Bhai Kanhaiya ji to morally whitewash the surrender of Punjab's water. This isn't compassion - it's political betrayal," Bajwa said.
He alleged that Mann failed to defend Punjab's constitutional and legal position.
Opposition parties in Haryana slammed the Haryana and Punjab governments for "misleading the public".
Haryana Congress chief Rao Narendra Singh in a statement said since the Supreme Court had delivered its verdict in favour of Haryana, the state government should file a contempt of court petition against the Punjab government. "There is no justification left for further talks, as the apex court's decision is clear and unambiguous,'' Rao Narendra said, accusing the BJP government of failing to protect Haryana's rightful share of river waters.
Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) president Abhay Singh Chautala in a statement said if Punjab CM believed that none of the two states should be deprived of its rights, then Punjab should ensure that the SC orders were implemented. He also targeted Nayab Saini, calling him a "dummy CM who cannot take decisions independently".
Jannayak Janta Party leader and former deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala hit out at the BJP, stating said that the saffron party's governments at the Centre and in the state did not want a resolution on SYL issue due to Punjab elections next year....
